UFC 136 Results: EDGAR VS MAYNARD

UFC 136: EDGAR VS MAYNARD 3 - Saturday, October 8, 2011, at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas

In the main event, UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie "The Answer" Edgar beat Gray Maynard - Maynard tagged Edgar early and often in the first round, but could not finish, and ended up losing the momentum to Edgar in the second round. Edgar continued to build steam in this fight, until he was able to finish off Maynard in the fourth round with punches. With this definitive conclusion to an amazing trilogy of fights, for the first time in almost 2 years, Edgar will now be able to fight someone other than Gray Maynard or BJ Penn, which have been his opponents for his last 4 fights.

In the co-main event, UFC Featherweight Champion Jose "Scarface" Aldo also successfully retained his title. After a strong first round from perennial UFC title contender Kenny "KenFlo" Florian, Aldo took charge for the next 4 rounds and won a clear-cut decision. To his credit, Florian went the distance with one of the best pound-for-pound fighters on the planet and didn't look bad in the process.

Chael Sonnen returned from a lengthy layoff, due to a steroid suspension and legal issues, to soundly beat Brian "All-American" Stann. Sonnen used his vastly superior grappling abilities to almost completely neutralize Stann, before eventually finding an arm-triangle choke in the second round for the submission victory. After the fight, the always-colorful Sonnen called out UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva for a rematch on Super Bowl weekend. Sonnen upped the ante this time, offering a deal where if Silva loses, he leaves the middleweight division, and if Sonnen loses, he leaves the UFC completely.

The Ultimate Fighter 12 semifinalist Nam Phan and Leonard "Bad Boy" Garcia put on a barnburner of a featherweight scrap. Nam lost a controversial decision to Garcia at the TUF 12 Finale, but not in this rematch. After an impressive first couple of rounds for Phan, Garcia took it to him in the final round, but it was too little, too late, as Phan was already ahead on the judges' scorecards.

In the opening PPV fight, Joe "J-Lau" Lauzon scored one of the biggest upsets of the year with a quick submission victory over top lightweight contender Melvin "The Young Assassin" Guillard.

Demian Maia outclassed Jorge "The Sandman" Santiago en route to a clean sweep unanimous decision victory, and former WEC lightweight champion Anthony "Showtime" Pettis won a split decision over Jeremy "Lil Heathen" Stephens.
