American Continental Boxing Championships

American Boxing Confederation LogoResults: Finals, 20 June. The Ecuadorian squad won the team title with five gold medals, one silver and two bronze, in the Elite Continental Boxing Championship, that took place in Quito, Ecuador.

The event was attended by 15 countries and more than 100 fighters who sought since Tuesday 15, June, to become the best boxer in the Americas.

The Ecuadorian boxers performance showed notable improvement in these championships and out of the nine Ecuadorian competitors, six were able to qualify for the finals, they were: Carlos Quip (48 kg), Jose Meza (51 kg), Jaime Cortez (75 kg) Italo Perea (81 kg), Julio Castillo (91 kg) and Jorge QuiƱones (+91 kg) who achieved five gold medals, one silver and two bronze, achieving 33 points, followed by Cuba with 22 and Brazil, in third position with 15 points.

This tournament was rated as being of high technical level and quality, by the continental boxing authorities, who controlled the contest as Domingo Solano, AIBA Vice President and President of the American Boxing Confederation and other members of the Executive Committee of AMBC such as, Luis Boselli of Brazil, Luis Zelikowicz of Argentina, Rafael Vega of Costa Rica and 14 judges including one French and one German.

Best Boxer of the tournament was the Cuban Yoniel Iglesias, Continental Champion in the 64kg category. Best coach in the tournament was awarded to Segundo Chango of Ecuador and the award for best referee, went to a female official from Brazil, Marcela Sosa.
