President's Cup 8 to 11 December 2009

 

 

A stunning lineup featuring no less than seven medalists from this year's AIBA World Championships in Milan will take part in the AIBA President's Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan next week

Eight continental teams have been invited to compete in the President's Cup, created in honour of current AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu and held for the first time in May 2008 in Taipei. At its meeting in 2009, the AIBA Executive Committee decided to introduce a new competition format, featuring Confederation teams.

Two teams each from Asia, America and Europe and one apiece from Africa and Oceania will be in action at the Serhedchi Olympic Sport Complex, with no more than three boxers from one country on the same team.

AIBA World Championship medalists Tugstsogt Nyambayar (51kg) and Uranchimeg Munkherdene (64kg) from Mongolia, Botirjon Mahmudov of Uzbekistan (69kg), Oscar Valdez of Mexico (57kg), Alfonso Blanco of Venezuela (75kg), John Joe Nevin of Ireland (54kg) and Oleksandr Usyk from Ukraine (91kg) will all be involved.

Olympic bronze medalists Alexis Vastine of France (64kg) and Yerkebulan Shinaliyev of Kazakhstan (81kg) as well as 18-year-old rising star and AIBA youth world champion Nanao Thokchom Singh of India (48kg) will also compete in Baku.

The teams will arrive in the Azeri capital on Sunday 6 December, with the general weigh-in and official draw taking place the following day. The first day of competition is Tuesday 8 December and the finals will be held on Friday 11 December. The winning team will be awarded $50,000, while the gold medal winners in each weight category will receive $3,000.
